I was so very, very disappointed, and was literally aghast at the subservience of the 43 Republican U.S. Senators who voted to acquit former President Trump in the just-concluded Impeachment trial.

The hypocrisy of many (Mitch McConnell being the most egregious example) expressing agreement with every argument that was made by the U.S. House of Representatives Impeachment Managers in the trial, yet choosing to acquit former President Trump on a technicality is abhorrent. I now see in their decision why President John F. Kennedy’s book “Profiles in Courage” is such a thin book. They all failed the test of courage.

Having the courage of one’s convictions requires making decisions that are not popular or self-serving. If Jesus had put the crucifixion up to a majority vote among his disciples, he would have been spared that horrible death. Yet, he turned on Peter when that “spokesperson” for the well-intentioned objected to his stated course, and said, “Go to hell!” (literal translation that’s been cleaned up in English translations)

Perhaps that’s our best response to those who have chosen to save their political necks this time.
